Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart & Viggo Mortensen star in the latest from auteur David Cronenberg, Crimes of the Future. The Canadian cinematic visionary screens the feature as part of Cannes Competition Official Selection 2022, marking his first feature since 2014’s Map to the Stars.
The synopsis notes: “As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.“
The trailer is packed with gruesome body horror and gives very little of the above plot away. Cronenberg’s latest looks like an asserting, uncomfortable piece. Cannes reactions should start coming in soon so more will be revealed in due course but early word says this is the filmmaker’s most unsettling film since Crash.
