Screen Icon: John Forsythe

It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year since the passing of legendary TV star, John Forsythe. Known to millions as the iconic Blake Carrington in hit 1980s phenomenon, Dynasty. John also gained legions of fans through voicing Charlie in Charlie’s Angels, as well as being the highly respected star of such classics as Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry and Topaz. As well as countless television, film and stage roles, John also had a passion for thoroughbred racing and was often regarded as one of Hollywood’s nicest and most genuine stars.

We’ve taken a look at our favourite John Forsythe performances.

The Trouble With Harry (1955)
John starred as free spirited artist and shows his strong flair for comedy in one of Hitchcock’s few ventures into the genre. He is supported by the excellent Edmund Gwenn and Shirley MacLaine. Although a box office disappointment, this an underrated classic.

Madame X (1966)
John stars alongside Lana Turner and future Colbys co-star, Ricardo Montalban in this 1966 drama. This is an exciting tale of blackmail and intrigue with strong performances all round – especially John as Turner’s characters husband.

In Cold Blood (1967)
This is a little seen but excellent adaptation of Truman Capote’s novel. John stars as the chief detective investigating a horrible crime, and is on top form.

…And Justice For All (1979)
Fantastic portrayal of corruption in the US Legal system and one of Al Pacino’s first starring roles after The Godfather Part II. This isn’t one of John’s usual roles, he plays a judge who thinks he is above the law, an plays almost an embodiment of evil and corruption in the film – it’s an extremely powerful performance.

Dynasty (1980-1989)
John starred as Blake Carrington, a wealthy Denver oil tycoon with dysfunctional family. This is really such a wonderful role, and I’d recommend if you’ve not seen Dynasty, you rush out and buy the DVDs.

The Powers That Be (1992-1993)
Difficult to find, but this really an excellent sitcom. John stars as a bumbling senator and once again shows of his skills as a comedic actor. Devised by the creators of Friends, the show also features fun performances from  Holland Taylor, Joseph Gordon-Levit, Peter Macnicol and David Hyde Pierce.
