Norwegian pop icons KEiiNO drop their cover of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody as 2020’s Global Pride anthem. The track is of course a KEiiNOfied version of Whitney’s dancepop classic with each of the band’s respective members managing to put their distinct flair on the song.
Opening with Tom Hugo’s rippling synthed-up vocals, the production mounts with Alexandra Rotan joining in by the chorus. As the chorus begins, KEiiNO’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody intercuts it with Fred Buljo’s traditional Sámi raps. It’s very KEiiNO, it’s very camp – and we wouldn’t change it for the world.
The official press release notes: “Norway’s powerhouse pop trio KEiiNO has covered a song with a statement millions of people around the world can relate to right now: “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”. The song is the official 2020 Global Pride Song, and all revenue goes to the Global Pride organization. The music video containing dance-contributions from professional and amateur LGBTQIA+ dancers from around the world, as well as footage from KEiiNO’s performance at Madrid and Oslo Pride, premiere 27.06.20!”
As the press release notes, the proceeds for the track will go to the Global Pride organization centred on supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.
