Shania Twain gives us her first taste of new music in five years with Not Just a Girl, the title theme from her new documentary. The track is penned by Mark Ralph, Shania and Wayne Hector, with production from Ralph also, and features on her freshly released compilation album Not Just A Girl (The Highlights).
Sonically the track feels like a natural progression from the singer’s sound on her 2017, featuring themes of female empowerment in lines such as “I’m not just a girl / Oh just a girl / I pack my suitcases / I’m going places / I’m gonna rule the world…” as well as a big sing-a-long chorus. Not Just a Girl showcases the breezy country-pop sound that Shania helped popularise with career-defining LPs Come On Over and Up.
Shania has finished recording her new studio album which is thought to be arriving in 2023. The singer also has a Christmas album in the works – hopefully that doesn’t delay the release of the new non-holiday collection.
Shania’s Not Just a Girl documentary premiered on Netflix this week for UK viewers.
