WURST (formerly Conchita Wurst) collaborates with Spanish artist Ricky Merino on a new cover of Bronski Beat’s seminal queer pop classic Smalltown Boy.
Shining against gentle guitar and synth production, Ricky Merino and Wurst as queer individuals fully manage to convey the the emotive truths of the queer experience showcased in Jimmy Somerville and Steve Bronski’s original lyrics. Both performers sound faultless, on this original incarnation of the Hi-NRG classic, the production is still packed with buoyant synths but somehow still feels understated and impactful allowing the emotion of their vocals to impress.
The track follows Wurst’s earlier collaboration with Lou Asril, a new version of 1977 Austrian disco hit Lovemachine. 2020 has seen Ricky release new Spanish singles Bestia, Perfecto, and a solo version of Smalltown Boy.
