Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta edges closer to a cinematic release, with some of the provocative feature showcased in a freshly released trailer. Verhoeven’s first feature since 2016’s Isabelle Huppert starring Elle sees him adapt Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy by Judith C. Brown, with the cinematic synopsis described as follows:
“In the late 17th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.“
The Dutch cinematic titan assembles a cast including Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia and Lambert Wilson for the project which is due to hit French cinemas on July 9th 2021. A UK release has yet to be announced.
