2009 saw the release of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, which is set to get it’s sequel in December this year. However, did you know another Sherlock Holmes was in the works starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the super-sleuth and Will Ferrell as his trusty Dr. Watson. Although it’s thought Columbia who were producing Cohen’s Holmes were not happy about about competing against Richie’s Holmes, and the project now seems dead. I’m feeling a sense of deja-vu here with 2012 seeming to be the year of Snow White. It seems you folks can’t get enough of raven haired beauties, dwarfs and evil queens. Well next year we’ll have The Brother’s Grimm: Snow White and Snow White and the Huntsman both seem to have interesting strong points and a few negatives.
The Brother’s Grimm: Snow White
The Good
- Excellent and exciting director on board in Tarsem Singh, who is likely to become one of Hollywood’s hottest properties after the epic Immortals comes out.
- Lily Collins is one of the newest up and coming talents after her performance in The Blind Side and the upcoming Priest.
- From the plot description ‘A dark twist on the classic fairy tale, in which Snow White and the seven dwarfs look to reclaim their destroyed kingdom.’ It seems like they’re taking on the story from a dark angle which is bound to be interesting (Think Snow White: A Tale of Terror)
The Bad
- Julia Roberts as The Evil Queen… I’m not entirely convinced. I’ve never seen her do anything as ‘out there’ so it will be interesting to see how she does.

The Good
- Charlize Theron’s casting as The Evil Queen, is likely to be quite interesting. Charlize is such a beauty that I can picture the high camp of her performance, and I’m very excited to see it.
- Hugh Jackman pretty much guarantees the film box office success, the Huntsman should be a strong rugged character, and Jackman seems perfect for the part.
The Bad
- Kristen Stewart, with the casting of Stewart as Snow White, they’re clearly going for something that will appear to the Twilight masses, which makes me think this may be like Twilight, which makes me think this is not a good thing.
- The plot description sounds like a handful of crap 80s action comedies ‘A huntsman is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but instead he chooses to let her go and the two are evidently chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape.’
- As for the director, Rupert Sanders, he seems to be a bit of a blank canvas at the moment
