Many will remember former Miss America Suzette Charles‘ dancefloor anthem Free to Love Again, released back in 1993. Suzette’s debut album never materialised at the time due to challenges with her record label home, RCA, yet in an exciting turn of events, Suzette’s debut album is now slated for release on the 22nd of May.
Suzette was a former opening act for Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Sammy Davis Jr., and was taken on by Barry Manilow’s manager. However, the first bi-racial Miss America was unhappy with the R&B direction RCA were moving her towards. The musician defied the label and flew to the UK to record with legendary pop hitmakers Stock Aitken and Waterman, resulting in the star being dropped.
Suzette has re-teamed with producer Mike Stock for the set, which has spawned the new single Whenever You’re Around. The album features six songs from Suzette’s original work with SAW in the 90s, re-recorded for the present day with Mike Stock, along with five brand new tracks.
Suzette shares: “Finishing this record is living out a dream. I’ve thought about these songs constantly for 33 years. It’s an amazing opportunity that Mike and I have finally been able to revisit them and create new songs at the same time.” Mike Stock adds: “I’m extremely happy we’ve got to finish our record. I know there’s a lot of Stock Aitken Waterman fans who’ve waited a long time for this album. I hope they like it, and I hope this is just the springboard for Suzette’s music.”
Suzette says of her return to the studio: “It felt like no time had passed. Working with Mike now is as magical as it was then. I don’t drink or smoke, so my voice has the same power and I’m raring to go. That goes for doing shows too. I’ve kept my body limber for any dancing, because deep down I always thought I might get the chance to do this again. On the new videos, I even had the same make-up woman I’d used for Free To Love Again in 1993.”
