Australian musician Toby Hobart has caught our attention several times on the site with gems including Paranoia and Cannibal. His latest original track fuses dark-pop and R&B vibes, featuring grooving production and striking vocals.
Toby sings: ‘I’m tryna stay afloat, just swim / Don’t tell me when it’s over / Feeling your skin / Darling, it’s only you and I / So let’s just swim…’ in lyrics that offer plenty of food for thought bubbling beneath the surface. Themes of disconnection and numbness, hedonistic highs and a loss of control run throughout, conveyed through lyrics from Toby and James Angus.
Moody dark R&B-pop production shimmers throughout, while Toby’s emotive and technically impressive vocals create an absorbing and enigmatic musical landscape.
The Aussie musician has promised more music to come, sharing on social media: ‘First thing I want to say is SORRY… this is my first single of the year… I know… (it’s April already?!?) However, it’s the start of something special and I needed the time over the last 4–5 months to get ready for what I’ve got in store for you this year. It’s exciting… I can say that much for now (more news to come soon). Until then… Swim.’
