Morrissey returns with Make-up is a Lie, the lead single from his upcoming studio album of the same name. The singer’s first release in six years sees him reunite with producer Joe Chiccarelli and return to the Warner label, Sire Records.
Written by Camila Grey, Jonathan Forrest Bates, and Morrissey, Make-up is a Lie marks a fresh start for the artist. None of the tracks on the new LP are taken from the scrapped Bonfire of Teenagers, an album that Morrissey claims was passed on by every major label in London. What does feature on the LP is a cover of Roxy Music’s Amazona, which originally appeared on the band’s 1973 album Stranded.
On the new single, Morrissey sings: “Ten years passed in boredom, I made my way to Paris, to stand before her gravestone, I read the words in granite, one, two, three, four, five, make-up is a lie, all make-up, make-up is a lie.” He delivers the lyrics with a sombre melodrama atop meandering guitar riffs. It is certainly good to have him back.
