EdFringe 2025 Review: Dropped

The cutthroat nature of youth football is explored in the staggeringly powerful Dropped from writer-performer Alfie Cain, making its Edinburgh Fringe debut this year. This one-hander explores the often forgotten human face of this lost generation of young football prodigies dropped before achieving their dreams. Delivered with a ferocious might by Cain, who has lived the experience as a former Chelsea FC trainee, Dropped is a play not easily forgotten.

Dropped takes us off the football pitch, as a young player recounts his journey in the world of Under 18s football. Furious after an altercation on the pitch, our protagonist delves into the debilitating effects the world of youth football has had on his mental health, education, and relationships, gradually recounting the intense and often damaging journey faced by many pursuing their football dreams.

Cain has lived the experience, being immersed in the world of youth football before retraining as a performer, something truly evident in the passionate emotion he embodies throughout the punchy production. The young star brings an impressive physicality to the role of the young player – one that lives, breathes and dreams of football – yet there is a beautifully pitched emotional depth as Cain gradually reveals that beneath this zealous enthusiasm is a protagonist scarred by his aspirational journey to football stardom.

The writer-performer embodies numerous characters, exhibiting each with a distinctive originality – delving into the interactions with teammates who have abandoned educational prospects for their chance at football stardom, parents who push their children to extremes to live vicariously through them, and predatory coaches abusing the power and trust which they hold. The result is a transfixing piece that captures the simmering pressure placed upon these young players, our protagonist’s rage bursting out as an altercation on the pitch leads to it emerging in a fiery torrent.

As a one-person piece, Cain has a mastery over the material, a steady hand guiding the audience through the rich emotional textures of Dropped. With gentle moments of humour peppered in throughout the intensity, the performer puts a human face on the grim statistic that only 1% of apprentices will get to play top-flight football, highlighting the story of the other 99% disposed and unsupported.

The setting of Edinburgh’s Easter Road Stadium brings the piece to life further, with the backdrop of the Hibernian FC grounds providing a tantalising glimpse of the arenas that many young sportspeople dream to play in. Effective sound and music cues paired with minimalist staging of a sports bench and changing room locker further transport us to the world of the aspiring football star.

By pulling back the curtain on the world of youth football, Cain challenges us to look at the human stories behind the statistics, leaving a lasting impression thanks to a punchy, visceral performance. Dropped is undoubtedly an early standout of the Fringe.

Dropped runs from 2–9 August at Hibernian FC’s Easter Road Stadium. Tickets available via edfringe.com.
