Benjamin Steer has delivered no shortage of impeccable music this year, and his latest release captures a desire for clarity and direction, and the support that the guidance of a loved one can provide, with reassurance in the small, ordinary moments of life.
Beginning with Benjamin’s vocals atop gentle acoustic guitar instrumentation, production soon builds with the introduction of piano and echoing vocal effects, creating a sweeping and emotionally powerful sound. Producer Andrew Wells co-writes with Benjamin and Adam Melchor, with the track tapping into emotions that are likely to ring true to many listeners.
The rising singer-songwriter shares: “Oh my days, how I am so proud of this one, and I am so blown away by the support. This song was never supposed to come out… it didn’t sound like a single and it was a different direction to the music that I was releasing. But I loved it from the conception of the verses I wrote in my living room a few months ago when I felt so confused and lost in my direction in my life. Contrary to my belief, no matter what platform or what stage I stood on, I still didn’t know what to say, and I didn’t have the clarity that I desired or hoped I would have. I had thought that going through this whole process of figuring out life… surely I would have something wise to say… turns out maybe I was just as confused in it all as I was at the start.”
Benjamin continues: “And moreover we live in a messed up world where being a young adult doesn’t feel like the life that we were promised as a kid. But I remember my mum when I was little, if I was stressed or lost she would tell me ‘take a breath’, ‘everything is going to be fine’. Honestly I hated hearing that, I would think no it’s not… cuz of this, this and this. But often, I catch myself in that thought: surrounded by people I love, cooking dinner, or in little insignificant moments where I am like hmmm… maybe in this moment everything is actually pretty ok… and life is pretty wonderful… and maybe I’m trying my best and indeed everything (most things) really is right where it needs to be… and I think that is a beautiful thought.”
Benjamin has delighted listeners this year with live dates, TV appearances and the release of singles such as Flatline, Dog Eat Dog, Be My Love and Trophy. We caught up with him at the start of the year; you can watch our interview on the site. You can see his next live dates below:
