Trailer: Chris Rock Penned ‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’

The Saw series gets a high profile revamp thanks to the star power of Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. Picking up after 2017’s Jigsaw, Spiral sees series regular director Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW II, III and IV) return with a script co-written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldberg, based on a story by Chris Rock. Lionsgate note:

A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Looking less like a traditional Saw film and harking back to the days of the nineties, early noughties detective crime thriller (think Se7en, The Bone Collector and The Silence of the Lambs), Spiral looks like an inventive update on a much-loved horror property. We do hope that the film does stay true to the series’ torture porn roots in some manner because it would not be a Saw film without a bit of gratuitous gore.

Spiral hits cinemas May 15th.
