GFF 2016: Programme Highlights

Last night saw the launch of the Glasgow Film Festival’s twelfth official programme and as always, it’s another corker with cinematic highlights from all over the globe. The festival which runs from the 17th to 28th of February boasts a line-up featuring 174 screenings – among them UK premieres of the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! and the Oscar-nominated Anomalisa. We’ve been scouring through the programme and have picked out our highlights of the 2016 line-up – and we’ve only just scratched the surface.

The Club

This Chilean piece about the sins of the Catholic Church sees four exiled clergymen working in a seaside monastery met by a face from the past.

Hail, Caesar!

The Coen Brothers’ joyous looking fifties set romp takes an all-star, comic dive into 1950s Hollywood in this send up of the studio system. George Clooney, Channing Tatum and Tilda Swinton star.

Summertime

This French drama explores the relationship between a militant feminist and a farmer’s daughter who fall passionately in love.

Labyrinth of Lies

Germany’s Academy Award entry details the discovery of a government cover-up surrounding Nazi crimes committed during World War II.

11 Minutes

Veteran Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski returns with a bravura, high energy thriller that follows disparate lives in Warsaw during the same eleven minutes.

High-Rise

Tom Hiddleston leads Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of the seminal J.G. Ballard text about life in an “unconventional” tower block.

James White

Sundance hit James White makes its way to the UK as it examines a twenty-something New Yorker coming to terms with his destructive behaviour. Cynthia Nixon co-stars alongside Christopher Abbott.

Screen legends Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau star in Atom Egoyan’s of Auschwitz survivors seeking repentance from those that killed their families.

Disorder

Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger are set to deliver tough performances in this tale of an ex-soldier with PTSD  hired to protect the wife and child of a wealthy Lebanese businessman while he’s out of town.

Truth

Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett star in this newsroom drama centred on controversy surrounding George W. Bush’s military service records.
