We have heard Find Xanadu and Reverberotic, now Alison Goldfrapp delivers Sound & Light from her upcoming album Flux. The track sees the Strict Machine hitmaker collaborate with co-writer and co-producer Stefan Storm, as well as producer Lazy Weekends.
Alison wrote the number in Sweden at the start of 2024 with the track emerging from the star witnessing the Northern Lights for the first time. She shares “I’d been chasing the Northern Lights for years. I’d gone to Finland, Iceland and Norway but never managed to catch them.” Yet it was the night that she had just written a song about them, she finally saw the lights shining over Southern Sweden, sharing it was “almost like she had summoned them through song”. She adds the number is centred on “the excitement of an open vista and wanting to embrace a new feeling of emotional freedom.”
The musician shared with fans “This song began on a snowy cold January in Sweden. The lyrics came about from a craving for freedom, space and clarity. I fantasied about the Northern lights, I’d never seen them. In the Summer after the song was completed, I went to visit a friend on a small island near Stockholm. On the night I arrived we stood by the water looking up at the sky and they appeared! This is August….whaaaat…this is so crazy! So, I like to believe..in fact I do believe! This song that Stefan and I wrote together summoned the lights. It also manifested the strength and calm I so badly needed at that time.”
Talking about releasing Flux as an independent artist, Alison shares: “If you’re lucky enough to have the option, owning your own masters feels like a no-brainer these days. While being a solo independent artist comes with its own set of challenges, it truly suits me and has given myself and the people I work with a sense of empowerment and invigoration for this album.”
