We’ve been keen fans of Zak Abel on the site for a number of years now, so new music from the rising star is always appreciated. Zak releases his new number Home through Rise Recordings after partnering with BMG Recordings to release his 2023 debut album Love Over Fear.

On Home, Zak delivers a more roots-driven country sound which helps lend a further rugged soulful quality to his vocals. The loved-up number is underpinned by an acoustic guitar and up-tempo percussion which drives the number forward with a propulsive musical energy. The chorus sees Zak croon: “Home / Is wherever / Wherever / You are / I Hope / That you’re never / You’re never / Too far…” in the rousing, high-energy lyrics.

Zak shares: “Just over a year ago, I did a writing camp with Kygo, his buddy Mads, Sandro Cavazza, Robin Stjernberg, and JL, who was there to film everything. Every single person in the group made me feel so comfortable to be exactly who I was. There was no judgment, just a bunch of kind, flawed, silly human beings trying to make some cool music. We had some deep moments. We all opened up about our lives, drank a load of wine, ate some awesome food, and we laughed—a lot! The first line of the song is inspired by Mads’ laugh. It’s the best laugh in the world.”

He continues: “Once I got back from that writing trip, I sat down with a guitar on my sofa, and while reminiscing on the experience I’d just had, I wrote Home… I then traveled to Sweden to get in the studio with the incredible Robin Stjernberg, and he produced the track into what it is today, plus some additional production from the incredible Ollie Green. It then got mixed and mastered by the incredible Sören von Malmborg.

The musician reflects on now working as an independent musician: “This song is the start of a new chapter for me… It is the first time I’ve ever released a song without a label, and if I’m honest, I’m kinda terrified ‘cause I’ve never done this before. I’ve been making music for 12 years now, and I feel so lucky to be able to write, record, and perform songs as a “job.””

The sound of Home is a fantastic direction for Zak who has continued to experiment musically, leading to big name collaborations with the likes of Kygo, Nile Rodgers, Alan Walker and Chris Mears.
