“Won’t you put down your phone and look me in the eye? Got all dressed up for you but you seem so occupied, Maybe space is all it takes this time, To fix us…” Shakira sings in her latest single Don’t Wait Up which sees her return to English language recording for the first time since 2017. The track is produced by Shakira and Ian Kirkpatrick, who also write alongside Emily Warren.
The track is a welcome return for Shakira with its mellow bouncing electronic production giving it a retro-house/classic EDM vibe, whilst the singer sounds as sultry and exciting as ever. It may not have the immediate punch as Shakira’s last English language lead single Can’t Remember To Forget You with Rihanna, but this is an undeniable grower that does provide something of an earworm.
The singer told Zane Lowe “I have to say, I’m very nervous because it’s my first English song in a long time because I’ve been focusing on Spanish songs only lately, but this song came about and I’m like, yeah, it’s time. It’s time to do this again and I’m happy, and I’m so inspired right now.”
