We’ve never been fans of Christmas Albums here, so it takes two very special stars to get us this excited – and they are John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who release This Christmas today.
The reason that we’re drawn to this, aside from the two iconic Grease and Two of a Kind stars, is because it is the epitome of the Christmas album. Many performers do half-hearted, lazy seasonal albums, but This Christmas is always brimming with energy – most notably from the brand new track ‘I Think You Might Like It’ boasting such amazing camp that it feels like an Xmas anthem you could imagine gay truckers blasting from their vehicles during the holiday season.
This Christmas feels warm and intimate, with the relationship between Newton-John and Travolta remaining hugely authentic. It simply feels like two old friends singing some well-known songs together – plain schmaltzy, kitsch Xmas fun. Other stars drop by including Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Cliff Richard and James Taylor. The presence of Streisand and Newton-John on I’ll Be Home For Christmas is enough to make us hyperventilate with excitement.
If you need anymore help in whether to buy this seasonal masterpiece, then simply look at that trashy promotional photo above. We could go into analytical discourse on why Olivia’s cup is so much bigger than John’s alone, but we’re not going to do that. We’re thinking of having it made into a canvas print.
This Christmas is out today. You can stream the album here.
