Irish recording talent Robert O’Connor readies his EP Transcendence after releasing stellar new single Destination Anywhere. This marks the Dublin born artist’s major return since his 2013 Resistance EP and you can hear the full thing on the 20th of November.
We had a sneak preview of the Transcendence EP and were bowled over from the stunning cinematic introduction, flowing into the contemplative Destination Anywhere, a twinkling escapist anthem that pays homage to classic electronic-pop. “Cause I wanna know, what it’s like to be free/What it’s like to be fearless, how can I get away, from all of this madness” Robert sings on the soaring chorus that sings of shedding life’s stresses. The euphoric tone is further set by a gorgeous interlude which introduces Over (Before It’s Begun). The track quickly hits us with the heart and conviction that Robert packs into his beautifully-accented vocals, shining against layers of relaxed synth beats, giving the track a breezy Mediterranean club vibe.
Older (’20) immediately strikes George Michael parallels with its title, yet the meditative themes and lyrical openness hammer further similarities. “The days are long when I don’t have you, to see when I come home when my work is through, and the night never ends, when every night that I spend is alone, even when I’m with someone,” Robert sings against bubbling synth production, perfectly capturing the sense of longing for someone who is not there. Real Good Fight closes the main tracks with a motivational gusto with Robert packing an energised attitude into the understated feel-good track, featuring immaculate production from Robert and Skynem GT. A gorgeous instrumental outro closes the set, ensuring we end the experience of Transcendence on an enthused high.
